An Unexpected Mission
Introduction
Jack and Tom are NASA astronaut trainees and colleagues .They participated in a training program for being astronauts. During the training exam, Jack aced it, but Tom barely passed. Finally the big day came. NASA was preparing to send two astronauts to its new space station for a special and urgent mission. Jack and Tom were the ones chosen. A member of mission control told Tom, “You were very lucky that NASA had a new space station. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be here.”
The launch
On January 21st, 2019, at 10:46 am, the launch was about to occur. Jack and Tom were already in the capsule waiting for the countdown. Bang! The engine failed. Very large clouds of smoke billowed. Jack and Tom felt a very heavy thud and they flung from their seats. Tom nearly killed himself by falling to the floor. Jack dove under the seat and grabbed Tom immediately. They launched the rescue craft and managed to contact the rescue team from NASA. This launch accident delayed the mission for about one week.
The Connection with the Space Station
On January 28th, 2019, the second launch was successful. Jack and Tom attempted to connect with the space station after a 16 hour flight. When they arrived, they tried to dock with the space station. But their capsule crashed into it. They could not go inside the space station through the capsule. They had to find a door that let them into the space station. They had to act very quickly because they were low on oxygen. Jack knew there was an entry on the top of the station for space walks. But it was not easy to climb there in a very short time. Tom said they had to try. Then Tom stepped on Jack’s shoulder, reached the top of the station and opened the entry. They got into the station before the oxygen ran out. They loaded the station up with food.
The Fire
On February 2nd, 2019, mission control broadcasted a message to Jack and Tom that said the mission was over. When they were intercepting the message, a fleck of very flammable paint hit the station. It burned a hole through the walls. The hole caught fire immediately. Jack and Tom fumbled around for the door. The fire had covered almost half of the station. They raced out, but a pole that had been tipped over tripped them. They sped outside. Jack said, “I can handle this all by myself.” He was wrong. The fire had spread even further and was now destroying the other end of the station. Then, Tom decided to float back to the capsule and wait. The tether snapped. They screamed. Tom decided to climb the station to the rather undamaged capsule. They managed to get there. Mission control planned a launch to rescue Jack and Tom.
Conclusion
Mission control was repeatedly contacting the space station with no reply. On February 3, a member of mission control angrily raged at the mission planner, “YOU SAID THIS MISSION WOULD BE SPECIAL! IT IS SPECIAL ALRIGHT-A SPECIAL SUICIDE MISSION!”
Meanwhile, Jack and Tom were running out of supplies and food. Then, on February 7, a new capsule was heading their way. They jumped in. When they got back to Earth, a party was set up on the launchpad. They had landed just a few metres off course of it.
When they got back home, they saw an interesting article which led to a special website. They found out a secret that they have been keeping ever since.
